The City


Less known but it is surprisingly rich cultural heritage.The region has been inhabited since ancient times. There are remnants of settlements from the the Neolithic period (6000 BC).Later archeological finds evidence for the civilization of the Thracians and Romans. In the XVII C. Targovishte is already a center of the most popular fair in the European part of the Ottoman Empire.Particular interest are Eneolithic cultic prehistoric scene of village Ovcharovo, Thracian gold treasure from the village of Kralevo (III century BC). In Targovishte region the tourists can visit the Misionis Fortress  and old quarter Varosha.

School “Sveti Sedmochislenici”

The historical exhibition and art repository are located in the building of the school “St. Sedmochislenici”. The building is a cultural monument of national importance. It was built in 1863 to clerical school, it is unique and rare in its scale for Bulgaria since the Renaissance. Petko Slaveikov has taught there. That is why in historical consciousness of the people of Targovishte the school remains “Slaveikov school.” Today here it kept the fund of the Historical Museum, which counts 30,000 museum pieces.

House Hadji Angelov

House Hadji Angelov is an architectural monument of XIX century of local importance in which is located ethnographic exhibition of the Historical Museum Targovishte.Built in the 1863 by Tryavna masters house is a model of symmetric Renaissance house with carved decoration, artistically painted holkeri and modern architectural details of the time.

School “Hadji Rusi”

Here is housed the archaeological exposition of the Historical Museum.Chronologically cover the time from VII century BC. to XIV century.Presented are Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, antiquity and Middle Ages.The exhibits are located in seven halls with a total area of ​​354 m2.Among them there are some that are unique and have no precise analogues, such as the famous cultic scene from the village Ovcharovo (Chalkolithic period), gilded ceramic urn-hydrate from the village of Kraljevo (III century BC.), the combined silver surgical instrument Lyublen (II century AD.), etc.

Assumption of the Holy Virgin Targovishte (Uspenie Bogorodichno)

It is described as one of the most beautiful Renaissance church buildings from all Bulgarian lands.Built in the 1851 by famous masters from Tryavna.The architectural style of the temple is a three nave pseudo built of stone, with an area of 510 square meters.During the first years of the twentieth century, towards the church was built and the bell tower, designed by Italian engineer and stands over 30 meters.

Natural sights “White Horse” and “Waterfall”

Located in the picturesque area “Parka” (7 km from the city of Targovishte), formed by the bed of the river Vrana.”White Horse” is a rock formation that resembles an image of a horse and “Waterfall” is a small waterfall, formed by the coming out of rock small underground feeder of the river Vrana.

Lake “Borovo Oko”

Interest for tourists and a pleasant place to relax represents the beautiful lake”Borovo oko”.The lake is situated in a picturesque park near the Art Gallery “Nikola Marinov” house museum “Stefan Kutsarov” and stadium “Dimitar Burkov ”

Old quarter Varosh

In the old quarter Varosh there are more than 30 buildings with interesting architecture.These include the School “Sveti Sedmochislenici”,the church , House Hadji Angelov, Kassarova House, House Sveshtarovi, houses pop Zachariev, Iliq Katzarov and others.

Misionis fortress/Krumovo kale/

An early Byzantine and medieval fortress Misionis is located 7 km. from city of Targovishte,on the way to city Omurtag until the beginning of the Dervishki passage.It has irregular form with an area of ​​25 acres, and the city is spread on more than 150 acres.The fortress was built during of Justinian I in the late V century as part of the defensive system of Byzantine Empire.It aims was to stop invasions the Slavs, Proto Bulgarians and Goths.In medieval guidebooks the fortress is described as “mysterious Misionis” – crowded town situated at the foot of the mountain, founded in ancient times.The city was crowded with people markets and natural riches and its citizens derived significant income from trading.

The statue of the Goddess Europe

Europe is a goddess in the Greek mythology. The legend says that Zeus appeared before Europe that played with friends on the beach as a white bull and then kidnapped and took her on the island of Crete.There he became a lovely young man and married her.By this union were born Minos, Sarpedon and Rhadamanth.The statue is placed in front of the Hotel “Terra Europe”

Svoboda Square
